Story

Hi, I'm Chris.

On 16 September, I’ll be climbing Brisbane’s Story Bridge as part of Voice for Victims Foundation’s inaugural Climb Against Crime.

For me, this climb is deeply personal.

On 12 December 2023, my life changed in a matter of moments when I was violently attacked by a 17-year-old at Alexandra Hills Shopping Centre.

After an altercation, I walked away to find security. I didn’t know the teenager was following me, armed with a knife attached to knuckle dusters.

I was stabbed near my armpit, collapsing my lung, and suffered a deep slash to my leg.

As an Army veteran, I had faced challenging situations before, but nothing prepares you for becoming the victim of a violent crime in your own community, or for everything that follows.

The physical wounds are only part of the story. There are the court appearances, the uncertainty, the frustration and the lasting impact that an act of violence can have on you and the people around you.

In March 2025, the offender was sentenced to detention but released immediately because of time already served. Only weeks later, he was arrested again over an alleged violent home invasion. Following an appeal by the Queensland Attorney-General, his sentence for the attack on me was later increased to 18 months of actual detention.

My experience has strengthened my belief that victims deserve to be heard, supported and considered throughout the justice process.

That is why I’m taking part in Climb Against Crime on National Victims of Crime Day.

I’m climbing not just for myself, but for every victim-survivor who has had their life changed through someone else’s actions.

I’m proud to support Voice for Victims Foundation, which provides free, confidential and trauma-informed support, advocacy and practical assistance to victims of violent crime and their families.

Every donation to my climb will help Voice for Victims continue being there for people when their lives have been turned upside down.

I survived violent crime. Now I’m climbing for those still finding their way forward.

If you can support my climb, I’d be incredibly grateful.
